ハワイ州のモットー「Ua Mau Ke ‘Ea o ka ‘Aina I Ka Pono」

ミニチュアのように見えるウクレレと、透明感があるのに力強い声。IZの”Hawai’i ‘78″ライブ動画です。

“Hawai’i 78″を初めて耳にしたのは、「Pure Hawaiian」というコンピレーションアルバムだった気がします。

このアルバムに収められているのはマカハサンズ時代のライブバージョンでした。
「ピュアハワイアン」のライナーノーツによる解説では
「現在のアメリカンナイズされたハワイを、昔のハワイアンが見たら嘆くのではと、語りかけるイントロが印象的である。
ハワイ州のモットーをリフレインしながら、ハワイ民族の誇りを尊重するIZのメーッセージソング」
と紹介しています。

ハワイ州のモットーというのが気になったので、調べると、サビの部分でもある「Ua Mau Ke ‘Ea o ka ‘Aina I Ka Pono」というハワイの言葉。

ほあはな日記さんが解説されていました。

「Ua Mau Ke ‘Ea o ka ‘Aina I Ka Pono」とは、ハワイ州のモットーで、「大地の生命は正義によって保持される」（The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness.）と訳されますが、歴史的な意味合いから実際には、「この国の統治権は正当な行為によって維持される」という意味がある。
